Overall Objective: To conserve the unique and globally important biodiversity of the semi-arid landscape in Georgia by drawing on indigenous and international expertise.
Objective: To develop effective mechanisms and capacity and enhanced advocacy to improve the conservation status of large carnivores in and around the Protected Areas of the semi-arid landscape (Georgia).
Results & Activities
1) Increased and improved conservation of important ecosystems and species as a result of effective capacity support to selected Protected Areas.
1.1. Needs Assessment and Action Plan for Vashlovani & Tusheti Protected Areas (PAs)
1.2. Addressing identified training & resource needs
1.3. Upgrading and implementing of anti-poaching strategies for the PAs
1.4. Update and implementation of Community Outreach Strategies of the PAs.
1.5. Update and implementation of Communication Strategies of the PAs
1.6. Conduct the analysis of knowledge gaps in biodiversity of the Vashlovani PA
1.7. Develop and implement a biodiversity monitoring strategy for the Vashlovani PA
1.8. Develop and implement large carnivore monitoring programme across the target area
2) Successful human-wildlife conflict mitigation measures developed and implemented in partnership with key stakeholder groups.
2.1. Conduct baseline survey into human-wildlife conflicts across the target area
2.2. Develop measures to reduce human-wildlife conflict
2.3. Improve local veterinary practices
3) Rural livelihoods enhanced in ways which offer sustainability and enhanced conservation of ecosystems and species.
3.1. Conduct socio-economic surveys for shepherding communities in the PAs
3.2. Small grant scheme for local communities
3.3. Establish wildlife viewing/tracking pilot project for the benefit of local communities
4) Improved attitudes and perceptions amongst regional and national target groups for biodiversity, carnivores and conservation.
4.1. Survey of local attitudes and perceptions
4.2. Local campaign to raise profile of biodiversity and carnivores through media, schools and community meetings
4.3. National campaign to raise the profile of biodiversity and carnivores
5) National policy and local practices positively influenced by lessons captured from Action.
5.1. Formation of project working group.
5.2. Support the development of a draft anti-poaching legislation.
5.3. Support the development of a national anti-poaching strategy
5.4. Create a regional Drylands Working Group
